A Grateful Journey: I take more than I give

When we consider whether to devote our time to volunteering work, many of us may struggle if we should GIVE our time and energy to help others, or GIVE our time to myself. People in Hong Kong are always busy in both professional and personal life. Time is always precious and we want to make sure it will be spent most effectively. Most people choose spending the leisure time on ourselves as we believe we will give more than we take when spending our time on volunteering work.

I had the same thought until I joined the activities of “Old Friend Star” since last Mar. Our visit to the elderly home is purely to bring some happiness and care to these old friends through a series of interacting activities performed by us, the volunteers, such as singing the golden songs, playing games, doing some simple exercises, performing drama and even only holding the hands of our old friends. We are not professional at all these performances but the participation of both the volunteers and our old friends, and our interaction bring us so much fun. The pure and basic care and interaction between human beings is so beautiful!

The smile and expecting face of our old friends giving to us were so rewarding and heart-warming. I was so grateful to TAKE so many happiness and heart-warming feeling from GIVING my leisure time to join the “Old Friend Star” volunteering work. I definitely take more than I give as the volunteer of “OldFriend Star” in the past 1 year.

Thanks & Regards,
Joanna
